Covenant School - Spectrum

About Our Campus

Covenant School Spectrum was founded in the fall of 2021 to serve as the educational program for students residing in the Spectrum Juvenile Justice Facility in Highland Park, Michigan. It is one of five Covenant Schools in Michigan, serving students in grades 7 through 12. Students
Complete work in the same curriculum employed by the other four Covenant Schools in Detroit and Grand Rapids. You can earn a high school diploma at Spectrum or transfer to another Covenant campus upon their release.

Meet Our Principal 

                                                                                               

Sonya Townsend is a proud Detroit native who has dedicated her career to the education and empowerment of young people in her community. Born and raised in Detroit, she understands firsthand the value of strong schools and supportive educators. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University before pursuing her Master’s in Teaching and Educational Leadership from Wayne State University.

In addition to her role as principal, Ms. Townsend also teaches in the College of Education at Wayne State University. Through this dual commitment, she not only helps shape the next generation of students but also mentors and prepares future educators for success in the classroom.

Her leadership is grounded in a passion for equity, academic excellence, and student growth. Beyond her professional work, Ms. Townsend is deeply involved in the community. She volunteers with the Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance and Mosaic Youth Theater, organizations that allow her to continue inspiring and supporting youth across the city.

When her schedule allows, she enjoys theater, reading, and traveling.

Ms. Townsend is honored to serve as Principal of Covenant’s Spectrum Campus, where she continues her lifelong mission to uplift students, families, and the community through education.
